9th English Language Arts

What will we be learning?

    • Grammar-punctuation, parts of speech, subject-verb agreement, use of various types of phrases and clauses, etc.
    • Vocabulary-Acquisition and accurate use of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases, sufficient for reading, writing, speaking, and listening at the college and career readiness level.
    • Writing-arguments, informative or explanatory texts, narratives, research
    • In-class literature-To Kill A Mockingbird, Romeo & Juliet, The Odyssey, and Fahrenheit 451 as well as various other texts

 

Required Materials

To successfully complete this course, you will need:

    • 2” three ring binder
    • 6 tab dividers for binder
    • Loose-leaf paper
    • Pencils and/or pens with blue and/or black ink only
    • 3 X 5 lined note cards

*A donation of any of the following items would be GREATLY appreciated:

·         Kleenex

·         Germ-X

·         Clorox wipes

·         paper towels

 

Classroom Rules:

    • Phones and backpacks are NOT allowed.
    • Be in your assigned seat, working on the bell ringer, when the tardy bell rings.
    • Do NOT talk while the teacher is talking.
    • Come to class prepared to work, and bring all appropriate materials.
    • Raise your hand for permission to speak or permission to leave your seat.
    • Face the front of the classroom at all times.
    • Class ends when I dismiss you, not when the bell rings.

 

Binder:

Please divide your binder into 6 sections using the tabs:

    1. DGP
    1. Vocab
    1. Grammar
    1. Literature
    1. Writing                                 6. Resources

 

 

Grading Policies:

Grades are determined on the point system.

 

    • Grammar tests- 100 points each
    • Literature tests- 100 points each
    • Vocabulary tests- 100 points each
    • Essays/Research Paper- 100 points each
    • Projects- 100 points each
    • Daily Grammar Practice- 5-25 points each
    • Daily classwork/homework-5-50 points each

 

 

Makeup Work:

Please refer to the Student Handbook for information regarding makeup work for excused absences. It is the student’s responsibility to check with me for any work missed because of an excused absence. If the student misses a test and the absence is excused, it is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time convenient for both the student and teacher to make up the test. Work missed because of an unexcused absence will NOT be allowed to be made up, and the student will receive a zero (0) for the missed work.

 

Assignment Deadlines:

Each assignment will be due on a specific date. I do not accept assignments late. If a student is absent when an assignment is due, the student is expected to turn in the assignment the next day that he or she is at school.
